Sabre buys online rival GetThere

Article Abstract:

Computerized travel reservations provider Sabre Holdings announced that it will acquire Web-based travel provider GetThere for $757 million in a merger that will combine two of the biggest suppliers of corporate online booking systems. Sabre has recently failed to secure airline contracts and will implement cut backs on its workforce. Sabre chmn and CEO William Hannigan said they would form partnerships with companies and will no longer try to enter into facility management opportunities by itself.

Cellphones: they're not just for talking anymore

Internet-ready cellphones are becoming in demand among businesses. Travel agencies are allowing bookings from palm handheld devices. Biztravel.com expects to be the first Web site to let consumers initiate travel bookings by pushing the buttons of their Web-connected cellphones. Trip.com allows its consumers to change itineraries using the Internet features of their phones. The latest advances are proof that more travel business will move to portable electronic devices.
