Safe e-commerce needs encryption

Article Abstract:

The Australian federal government introduced the Gatekeeper data encryption tool in May 1998. The tool is meant to ensure transactions over the Internet. The system is founded upon a Government Public Key Infrastructure which uses certificates of authority to identify the legitimacy of users. Data encryption is a controversial public issue, since most countries prohibit the exportation of strong encryption tools and forbid publications revealing secrets of encryption.

Since most US venture capital is utilized in locations such as Silicon Valley, it is not likely to travel to Australia. Most Australian investment in high tech comes from pension funds. Restructuring capital gains taxation could improve Australian investment in technology development.
