Safety concerns prompt recall of bike helmets, towing trailers

Article Abstract:

Thousands of bike helmets and bike trailers for towing kids were recalled by manufacturers and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Jul 6, 2000. The helmets were recalled after the CPSC found during its simulated tests that they crack after hitting a street pavement or a cement curb. Bike trailers manufactured by Burley Design Cooperative were also recalled after receiving a report about an incident in which one of the trailer's wheel came off, causing minor injuries to the biker.

Drivers complained of tread problems years before recall

Article Abstract:

Bridgestone/Firestone customers have been complaining since at least the mid-1990s about treads peeling off thousands of their tires. Over 1,100 owners of Firestone ATX tires have told the company that accidents triggered by blowouts had put their lives at risk and that mechanics and insurance agents were aware of a widespread problem. Claims that consumers sent to Bridgestone/Firestone from 1989 to 1999 seeking reimbursement for new tires and damage to vehicles, contain the warnings.

Trial against Firestone, Ford to start today in Texas

Article Abstract:

A personal injury lawsuit filed by Corpus Christi resident Donna Bailey is expected to go on trial Jan 8, 2001. Bailey was paralyzed as a result of a rollover accident involving the Ford Explorer she was riding after the vehicle suffered a separated tread on one its Firestone tires. Attorneys suing the two companies say Bailey's case could prompt both to resort to an out-of-court settlement. Mikal Watts, one of the attorneys representing Bailey, said both companies have discussed an amicable settlement but no agreement has been reached yet.
