Saving the coral reefs

Article Abstract:

The waters of the disappearing coral reefs in Indonesia's North Sulawesi province hold several hundred species of wildlife, including one quarter of the country's fish species, but industrial pollution, poisonous agricultural runoff, and coral mining have all served to damage the reefs enormously. However, an American environmental group called The Nature Conservancy has made progress in convincing fisherman to use less destructive fishing methods.

Article Abstract:

Nearly half of the Indonesian population may live in poverty by the end of 1998. President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie has suggested that Indonesian people fast twice a week, saving the country 3 mil tonnes of rice a year. He has also taken some drastic measures of spending money given to him by the International Monetary Fund.

After the Taliban banned the cultivation of opium poppies in Afghanistan in 2000, the Wa people along the Thai-Burman border took the opportunity to fill the gap in the marketplace. The Wa have reportedly built a new heroin laboratory north of Muang Yawn Mai, where both methamphetamine tablets and heroin are being produced.
