Bookbag of the future; dental schools stuff 4 years' worth of manuals and books into 1 DVD

Article Abstract:

If a test project succeeds, dental students will trade 400 lbs. of paper for a DVD disk. Updated each semester, the disk would contain all the materials for 4 years worth of courses. The price would be about the same, about $3000 to $4000, as the textbooks, but students like the idea being able to carry a laptop, instead of a stack of heavy books. Having access to all the material through a computer also means it is easier to search across the whole curricula for specific information.

Software may replace the eye chart on the wall; an online vision test is used by some motor vehicles departments

Article Abstract:

New vision-testing software is providing eye doctors and motor vehicle departments an innovative way to examine patients' and drivers' vision. Capital letters in rows can appear on computer screens in random order to prevent memorization. Online software includes color and contrast tests along with reading evaluation products to identify reading problems attributed to eyesight difficulties. Software programs on Web sites such as eyeplanet.com and thevisionplace.com, are being tested by DMV offices and public schools. Vision-testing software from VisionRX is also being used.

Saying goodbye to the stylus; as size and power hurdles disappear, researchers bring voice recognition to Palmtops

Article Abstract:

Hardware and software companies are developing voice-recognition systems for hand-held devices, which would then no longer require the use of wireless technologies and a stylus. Designers have been able to overcome the processing-power constraints of hand-held computers with embedded systems. Some of the companies working on embedded systems and software are I.B.M.'s Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Voice Signal Technologies and Lernout and Hauspie.
