Shadowy figures pull Pauline's strings

Article Abstract:

One Nation's Pauline Hanson lost the Liberal Party endorsement before the March 2, 1998 elections. This was a result of Hanson's comments to a journalist from The Courier-Mail regarding Aborigines, Asians, and immigration, which ran counter to the Liberal party's policy. Hanson refused to withdraw the comments and was later dumped. Extremists associated with the League of Rights may have been behind an earlier letter published under Hanson's name.

Coalition learns to protect its support base

Article Abstract:

Former Prime Minister Paul Keating's fear campaign against Coalition leader John Hewson's GST and Medicare plans backfired because it eliminated a vital group of older women who constitute 20% of the electorate. However, John Howard changed the policy by exempting all pensioners and residents from the new income-tested fees. He further guaranteed a minimum $15,000 to even the wealthiest of nursing home residents.

Debased Wik debate strengthens coalition resolve

Article Abstract:

The strategy of Aboriginal activists to attach labels such as "social justice" and "racist scum" challenges the ability of a government to govern. Throughout the negotiations, the opponents of the 10-point plan have made this a party political issue and that could divide the coalition.
