Shareholders get to put bio-engineered foods to vote

Article Abstract:

Resolutions presented by opponents of genetically modified foods, which were intended to pressure food, restaurant and seed companies to abandon genetic engineering, won enough support from shareholders to be eligible to appear on proxy ballots again in 2001. First-year resolutions proposed at Coca-Cola Co, Quaker Oats Co, PepsiCo Inc and Philip Morris Inc received 8.2%, 4.7%, 4.3% and 3.2%, respectively, which are more than the required 3% to qualify for a vote again in 2001.

Fruit war may hike price of European luxuries

Article Abstract:

The trade dispute over banana between the US and the 15-nation European union may lead to an increase in tariff for 16 European goods ranging from cheese to adhesives. The US is protesting the EU's banana regulations that are costing major US banana distributors because trade restrictions show preference to Caribbean bananas distributed by companies from the UK and France. In retaliation, the US is threatening to impose 100% tax on $520 million worth of European products.

Border could open soon to Mexican truckers

Article Abstract:

Mexican truckers could obtain a ruling that would open the borders of the US to them. A five-member panel has issued an arbitration ruling stating that the US was bound by the North American Free Trade Agreement to open its borders to Mexican trucks and was wrong to block them on safety grounds. Pres Bush is expected to accept the ruling rather than agree to compensate Mexico on the grounds that it has lost $2 billion due to the US policy.
