Peter Shaw has been appointed managing director of the Australian branch of British publisher Thames and Hudson. The publisher produces books on art, design, fashion, architecture and travel. It is renown as an art books publisher but 75% of its listings are in related categories. Shaw previously conducted his own business and was the Australian representative for the German publisher Taschen.

Birds Australia, the country's oldest conservation organization and its largest scientific wildlife society, is working on a 7-volume 'Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds,' using volunteer labor. Of the over $5 mil raised for the handbook, only $250,000 has come from the government. The last handbook on Australian birds was published in 12 volumes between 1910 and 1925.

'Jane's Fighting Ships' was first published by Fred Jane in 1897 as 'All the World's Fighting Ships.' The annual compilation of drawings and information on ships and their armaments has become a perennial best-seller. Jane made several accurate predictions in the book, including an innovative fast battleship in 1903 and aircraft carriers before the first successful airplane flight.
