Should the U.S. impose a carbon tax to encourage the development of alternative energy sources?

Article Abstract:

There are points for and against the imposition of a carbon tax for the development of alternative energy sources. The tax would definitely bring down the federal deficit to a manageable level as well benefit the environment in the process. Opposition to the measure, on the other hand, stems from the tax's effect on certain sectors such as coal exporters. Furthermore, with the reduced competitiveness of conventional energy producers in the international market, the US would be forced to import more oil thus, resulting in a bigger trade deficit. This would negate the original benefit achieved by the tax in terms of lower budget deficits.

Should the United States impose sanctions on countries responsible for religious persecution?

Article Abstract:

The persecution of Christians in countries such as China has caused some religious experts to call for both diplomatic and economic sanctions to prevent the US from tacitly supporting persecution. However, other religious experts point to the failure of sanctions to promote religious freedom and are concerned that the sanctions would harm US interests while causing a backlash against the very Christians they are designed to protect. Reliance on sanctions fails to consider the needs of the victims and should not be undertaken without multilateral support.

Does the Americans with Disabilities Act impose unreasonable burdens on business?

Article Abstract:

The 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act is criticized as an unreasonable burden for business to bear, but opinions differ. The law prohibits discrimination in employment based upon handicaps, and requires accommodations in the workplace to facilitate handicapped use. Critics cite the law as an unfunded mandate that imposes financial burdens. Supporters claim the law balances costs, and allows businesses to spend only what they are able to.
