Shutdown looms at Davie shipyard

Article Abstract:

Davie Industries Inc. of Levis, Quebec, is facing potential shutdown due to lack of finances which would threaten job security for over 1,000 employees at the shipyard. The company, which is presently the sole surviving shipyard in the province, has already received plenty of provincial and federal funds in the last 10 years. Davie's owner, Dominion Bridge Corp., needs to secure temporary financing for two weeks, noted Dominion Bridge spokesman Daniel Larouche. Larouche added that this would take the form of down payments on operations and short-term daily operations.

Charest's true colours? Tory blue

Quebec's Premier Jean Charest is toeing the line of Ontario's Tories. Business subsidies have been slashed and a number of social programs are likely to be cut down. Privatization in form of public-private partnership is the in thing in Quebec and labor laws are to become more stringent.
