Small telecom firm takes giant $7B leap

Article Abstract:

Tellabs, a Lisle, IL-based telecommunications equipment maker, announced recently its acquiring for $7.1 billion the Linthicum, MD-based Ciena, a leading supplier of a technology that splits fiber-optic wires into multiple channels. The deal demonstrates how telecom companies will do to acquire the high-speed capability that seems crucial to their survival. Likewise, Tellabs CEO Michael Brick also explains that the optical networking capacity is vital to the company's future. The company will reportedly pay for Ciena using its stock.

Speech-recognition telecommunications systems will soon emerge as the choice in the market, replacing phones that are needed to be dialed. For instance, wireless phone firms recently launched wireless handsets and services that feature hands-free voice dialing. According to investment bank Commonwealth Associates, the telecommunications speech-recognition market will surpass $5 billion by 2001, up from $407 million in 1997.

Qwest bid has CEO's attention

Article Abstract:

Qwest Communications International Inc's proposal to buy US West Inc for $40 billion leaves US West CEO Solomon Trujillo ruminating on the merits of the deal. The offer comes after Global Crossing agreed to purchase US West for $32 billion. Trujillo believes that the two companies are interested in a merger since US West is considered to lead the industry in terms of telecommunications innovation.
