Soapberry receiver takes bids on some assets

Soapberry's Financial Corp., operator of a chain of retail stores that specializes on hair, skin and body products, is being pushed into bankruptcy as creditors seek to acquire some its assets. Franchisees are complaining of alienation for head office, while receiver Shiner and Associates Inc. of Richmond Hill, Ontario, has set Mar 22, 1999, as deadline for bids on the company's name and trademarks. Toronto-based creditor Conventry Financial Corp. has filed a petition before a court to declare Soapberry as bankrupt.

B.C. medical device firm files for bankruptcy

Article Abstract:

Response Biomedical Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection and eliminated 21 of its 38 employees. The firm filed under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act to protect cash and assets as it tries to think of a plan to raise more money and get regulatory approval for its technology.

Alcan split to create new products giant

Article Abstract:

Alcan Inc., aluminum giant announced its plan to split itself in two by spinning off its rolled products assets into a new public company. The move is aimed for meeting the European and US regulatory requirements following the 2003 merger with French rival, Pechiney SA.
