Software to help introduce products: the wisdom - if not the wit - of 30 experts in management

Article Abstract:

Business Insight, an expert system from Business Resource Software, Austin, TX, is designed to help businessmen decide about product-introduction strategies. It also can be used to help decide a company's goals and can also help to establish and maintain good relations among members of a project team. The program is described as the 'most comprehensive and ambitious' strategic planner currently available. Its knowledge base is said to capture the expertise of 30 leading management experts. Business Insight was originally supposed to sell for $2,500 a copy, but the program's creators used the program itself to decide how to introduce it as a product. They decided to trade revenue for market penetration. The result is that Business Insight is now available for $495. The program runs on an IBM or a compatible. It requires 640 Kbytes of RAM and a hard disk.

Article Abstract:

Gordon E. Eubanks Jr, president and CEO of Symantec Corp, has been indicted along with Symantec's VP Gene Wang, on 33 counts of felony for allegedly stealing trade secrets via electronic mail from Borland International Inc, where Wang used to work. Eubanks, in vehemently denying any crime, thinks that the case is a business issue. Borland, he says, is faulting him for hiring Wang. Eubanks admits that the case has damaged his reputation significantly and is embarassing him. On competing with Microsoft, Eubanks says that Symantec is searching for more ways to cooperate with Microsoft than compete with it. He also believes that starting a price war with a company that has more money is not smart business strategy.
