Software's giants to square off

Article Abstract:

IBM and Microsoft Corp are developing competing software products to be introduced early in 1992. The products are IBM's OS/2 2.0 operating system and Microsoft's Windows 3.1 graphical user interface. IBM promises a powerful, sophisticated program with 32-bit speed and capabilities. Microsoft hopes to take advantage of the established popularity of Windows 3.0, and the software publisher has a 32-bit version of its program under development. It is too early to predict who will win this battle, but Microsoft seems to be in the lead. Microsoft sold six million copies of Windows during the past 16 months. But if Windows 3.1 should be 'buggy,' Microsoft's popularity could evaporate.
