Steel industry officials predict consolidation

Article Abstract:

Steel industry officials predicted a major consolidation among the world's steel manufacturers. Johannes Sittard, chief operating officer of steel maker Ispat International NV of Indonesia, said the economic turmoil in Asia is a driver of the consolidation in the industry. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen what will be the consolidation's impact on the Canadian industry and its three big integrated steel producers, according to John Mayberry, president of Dofasco Inc., Canada's second-biggest steel firm.

Auto industry roars in 1998

Article Abstract:

Canada's auto industry performed remarkably in 1998 thanks to increased vehicle production at several plants. Vehicle shipments grew 5% from C$56.7 billion to a record C$59.6 billion in 1998, while parts shipments increased 7% to a record C$27.7 billion in 1998 from C$26 billion the previous year. Automotive trade surplus zoomed 26% to C$11 billion from C$8.8 billion. Also hitting or almost hitting record levels are employment, vehicle production and Canadian content in North American vehicles.

Dofasco plans $20-million steel mill in Ontario

Article Abstract:

Dofasco Inc will put up a new mill somewhere in Ontario, Canada, to double its current annual capacity of 140,000 tons of steel tube. The new steel mill, which cost around C$20 million, will supply Budd Canada Inc and other auto parts manufacturers active in the growing area of hydroforming. Currently, the steel tubing being produced by Dofasco is supplied to Aurora, Ontario-based Magna International Inc, which turns it into frames for pickup trucks for General Motors Corp.
