Among the international disputes over cultural treasure, the most prominent issue covers Italy's ownership claim to the "Bronze Statue of a Victorious Youth" at the Getty museum in Los Angeles. Present confrontations include the protest by prominent figures from Italy's art world who blocked the government from loaning a painting for a show in Tokyo.

Stolen antiquities: Italy clamps down on artifacts smuggling: Policy triggered by trial of Getty curator

The Italian police investigating an art-smuggling case have charged nearly 50 people with selling of archeological treasures illegally to buyers in foreign countries in January 2007. Marion True, a former curator of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, is charged with conspiring to import stolen Italian antiquities, and is facing trial in Rome.
