Sun link is sought by I.B.M.: alliance suggested in desktop software

Article Abstract:

IBM has asked Sun Microsystems Inc to join Apple and IBM's joint venture company, Taligent Inc, in an effort to fend of Microsoft's entry into the market for workstation software. Microsoft's Windows and Windows NT has threatened the product development of Taligent Inc. While Sun has avoided alliances for some time, the company has become more responsive to such activities and collaborated with HP in the development of setting Unix software standards. Sun is working on a new system to replace the Unix software currently offered. The success of this project will have an impact on whether the company decides to join Taligent in developing system software. Sun's project may compete with the Taligent software; both are implementing object-oriented programming and both may target the corporate market.

Zenith Data is quitting desktop project

Article Abstract:

Zenith Data Systems announces it is withdrawing from the Advanced Computing Environment (ACE) consortium citing that it will concentrate on Intel microprocessor-based microcomputer systems rather than continue with the MIPS Computer Systems-based project. The ACE consortium is suffering from the withdrawal of other prominent founding companies such as Compaq. Also hampering the organization is the recent acquisition of MIPS Computer Systems by Silicon Graphics. Many feel that Silicon Graphics would have too much control over the consortium having purchased the manufacturer of the new architecture's microprocessors.
