'Sweet as chocolate:' a beauty queen faces a media storm after she is charged with assault

Article Abstract:

House, the reigning Miss Canada International, was arrested on assault charges on Oct 18, 1996, after she allegedly got into a fight with her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend. The 20-year-old beauty queen, who is studying nursing, was disqualified from another pageant because of the controversy.

Secrets behind the walls: Canada's correctional service faces a crisis

Article Abstract:

Justice Louise Arbour issued a report on abuses at the Kingston, Ontario Prison for Women. The report also attacked the culture of secrecy and coverup that pervades Canada's correctional system. Director John Edwards tried to institute reforms, but he resigned after the report was issued.

Mexico's economy took a drastic plunge after the peso was devalued 40% in Dec 1994. Since then, Pres Ernesto Zedillo has been trying to stabilize the economy and bring in more foreign investment. However, many Mexicans are still struggling and are express dissatisfaction with Zedillo.
