Telecommunications venture names chief

Article Abstract:

British Telecommunications PLC and MCI Communications Corp appoint current British Telecom managing Dir of worldwide networks Chris Earnshaw to be their new joint venture's CEO. The joint venture itself, which will provide seamless global telecommunications services for multinational corporations, remains nameless, however. British Telecom and MCI have pledged to invest $1 billion in the new company by 1998, with Telecom holding 75 percent and MCI 25 percent of its equity. The venture will employ 1,000 workers, over half in the US. Its headquarters will be near Washington, DC, in northern VA, close to MCI's own corporate headquarters. The venture awaits Federal Communications and European Commission approval, and must also withstand Congressional scrutiny. The 39-year-old Earnshaw joined British Telecom in 1972, took control of its British network in 1989 and assumed responsibility for its worldwide networks in 1991.

A.T.&T. executive is given global duties

Article Abstract:

Randall L. Tobias, AT&T's vice chairman, will oversee the company's international businesses. Tobias will manage AT&T's planning, development and operations outside the US. AT&T has pushed to increase growth of its international businesses since the breakup of the Bell system in 1984, but now, according to Tobias, the rapid level of growth of the 1980s will not be good enough in the 1990s. Currently, AT&T derives about 15 percent of its revenues from international businesses, but a goal is now set at between 20 and 25 percent by 1995. Industry observers say AT&T's goal is probably realistic, and attaining the goal will be made easier because of AT&T's acquisition of NCR Corp. AT&T is in refocusing its activities, aiming at what Chmn Robert E. Allen calls its primary objective - 'globalization.'
