Telstra sale drives Fischer to desperation

Article Abstract:

Australian Prime Minister John Howard has consistently failed to understand the political consequences of selling the remaining two-thirds of Telstra. Polls indicate that a majority of Australians are opposed to complete privatization of Telstra. Deputy prime minister Tim Fischer and communications minster Richard Alston are satisfied with selling only 49% of Telstra.

Senators John Howard's and Peter Reith's strategy for curbing the Maritime Union of Australia's (MUA) influence over dock workers was flawed, both legally and politically. The MUA and the Senators must engage in a dialogue to resolve the issue before lost production becomes too expensive.
