The US government and the state of California paid $US480 mil to Charles Hurwitz, a Texas junk-bond speculator, to save a 4000 hectare patch of redwood forest. Hurwitz's lumber company continues to cut down redwood trees on the rest of the land he owns in California. A variety of environmentalist groups from pacifists to violent radicals continue to fight logging in the redwood forest.
