The Politics of Energy

Article Abstract:

A examination of gasoline prices sparked by an oversupply of world oil shows the policy of purchasing oil form overseas suppliers has reduced the United States dependence on OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). But domestic oil production has declined. U.S. purchase of foreign oil is up 20% since 1973 and so is per capita energy consumption, which indicates the United States is more vulnerable to economic and military disruptions in foreign oil supplies. In addition, global warming is also impacting U.S. energy policy.

The issues

Article Abstract:

Fuel advocates predict that hydrogen fuel cells will replace the highly polluting fossil fuels that are the US' predominant energy source. The critics believe that US President George W. Bush's 2006 budget proposal, which consists of increasing spending on research into hydrogen technologies, next generation nuclear plans and 'clean coal' technology does not call for new funds in research of renewable-energy technology.

Hydrogen Initiative

Article Abstract:

US President George W. Bush's Hydrogen Initiative, presented in 2003, will provide $1.2 billion to develop commercially viable hydrogen fuel cells to power vehicles and generate electricity. The American Physical Society in 2004 stated that major scientific breakthroughs would be necessary for the Hydrogen Initiative to successfully produce a commercially viable hydrogen-fueled car by 2020.
