The Shifting Burden of Emergency Care

Article Abstract:

Hospital-chain operator Hospital Corporation of America finds itself in the unlikely position of trying to protect one of its community hospitals, Oklahoma University Medical Center which is threatening to stop providing emergency care. Specialty hospitals, which are growing in numbers, are both a service and financial threat to community and full-fledged hospitals because they only handle profitable specialty surgeries and recruit the best physicians away from other hospitals, but do not provide trauma or emergency care services that drain profits.
