A more traditional path for funding by SMEs to tap shoulders of family and friends at a time when Australian capital markets are awash with creative financing options is discussed. A key component of success for business is tight management of cash flow and even stricter budgeting, but financial backing from family and friends helps to avoid many of the hurdles faced pitching to banks and private equity houses, as well as retaining more control over the direction of the business.
