The barbed-wire elections

Article Abstract:

The Australian elections scheduled for the end of year 2004 promises to be an important event, with the entry of labor party leader Mark Latham who poses a serious challenge to Prime Minister John Howard. It is expected that there will be many crucial issues that will be taken up during the elections and the general elections scheduled in the US, Indonesia and Taiwan, could also have a bearing on the Australian outcome.

Article Abstract:

Brief description of Australia's Beaconsfield goldmine disaster on Anzac Day, which killed Larry Knight, and trapped Todd Russell and Brant Webb for several days, surrounded by boulders and rocks is presented. Some people in the mining community believe that too much rock was taken from some areas of the mine, leaving it dangerously unsupported, which caused the disaster.

The Australian federal election of 2001 in early September looked likely to see the government of John Howard fall and the Australian Labor Party under Kim Beazley triumph. Events on September 11 2001 in the United States have turned politics upside down and the result is uncertain.
