Ralph Klein, who takes credit for having come very close to balancing Alberta's provincial budget without a tax increase, is a self-styled populist who does not see himself as either liberal or conservative. Klein discusses his views on welfare, other public sector spending, and taxation.

Ralph Klein's secret national unity plan

Article Abstract:

Ralph Klein is rumored to be planning a secret initiative to unite the provincial premiers to head off a national unity crisis. Klein wants to divide responsibilities between provincial and federal governments to eliminate overlap. The effect of his plan on Quebec is discussed.

Klein-clone Harris will soon face the music

Article Abstract:

Klein will find it difficult to implement his proposals to lower taxes by one-third, balance the budget, and reduce provincial spending by $6 billion in three years. Unlike Alberta, Ontario does not strongly support free enterprise.
