Japanese voters on Jul 12, 1998, sent a vote of no confidence to the government, indicating they are no longer prepared to save corrupt and mismanaged financial institutions. The government's plan to rescue failed institutions has resulted in its economy facing an uncertain future. Many economists contend Japan's problems began as its property market crashed.

The collapse of Russia's currency, the ruble, has caused turmoil in the country's economy and other world markets. Boris Yeltsin's disappearance created rumors about the president's condition and accelerated an economic collapse already in motion. Many Russians fear Yeltsin plans to step down from office.
