The pit bull of Silicon Valley

Article Abstract:

Lawyer William S. Lerach has become the scourge of greedy high-tech executives by bringing class-action suits against them and their companies for securities fraud. The 47-year-old partner in the firm of Milberg Weiss Bershad Hynes & Lerach believes the culture of the computer industry encourages such fraud by disproportionately basing executive compensation on stock options. When executives discover their company is in financial trouble, they delude shareholders and financial analysts into thinking the company is performing better than ever. Once their deception has succeeded in raising the company's stock price well beyond the purchase price guaranteed by their options, the executives buy stock below market value and quickly sell it for a huge profit. Only then do they reveal the bad financial news that sends the company's stock into free fall. Lerach has suits pending against Apple Computer Inc, Symantec Corp and Conner Peripherals Inc.

Hewlett joins two-way TV collaboration; deal links computers and consumer devices

Article Abstract:

Hewlett-Packard Co and TV Answer Inc are working together to create the first national interactive television system. The resulting product would enable users to bank, pay bills, shop and order food by simply using their television sets. Hewlett-Packard will use technology from TV Answer Inc, a wireless data services developer, to market and manufacture products to control a two-way home television system. Hewlett-Packard expects the product to sell for less than $700, and anticipates its use in news polls, educational training, promotional contests and game-show participation.
