The red revival: with Yeltsin ailing, Russia's Communists are on a roll

Communist leaders such as Gennady Zyuganov are gaining power in Russia, and Yeltsin's failing health may provoke a change of leadership. It is possible that Communists could win control of the Duma on Dec 17, 1995, setting the stage for a bid by Zyuganov in the Jun 1996 presidential election.

There are 43 different political groups vying for votes in Russia's Dec 17, 1995, parliamentary elections. Vladimir Zhirinovsky's Liberal Democratic Party has resorted to soft-porn television ads to attract voters. However, Communist and nationalist candidates have the most support.

Mikhail Gorbachev has been quite critical of Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin, making many think that Gorbachev may try a political comeback. Yeltsin reacted by taking back some of the government perks he had granted to Gorbachev.
