Local multipoint communications systems (LMCS), once regarded as the first true example of content convergence and the technology that would propel Canada into a leading role in the information technology market, have yet to realize its vast potential. LMCS, also known as wireless cable, has been bogged down by equipment delays, high costs, changing business strategies and other technological problems. This has caused Canadian firms to slowly lose whatever headstart it had over the competition.

Onex, Telefonica team up to start fund

Article Abstract:

Onex Corp of Toronto, Canada, and Telefonica SA of Spain have formed a partnership to launch a $1-billion global investment fund aimed at the telecommunications industry. Onex will commit $150 million while Telefonica will contribute $250 million to the fund which is slated to start its operations on May 1, 1999. The companies believe that the convergence of technologies and the consolidation in the telecoms industry offer new investing opportunities for the fund.

Crescendo warns Call-Net about more deals with Sprint

Article Abstract:

The plan by Call-Net Enterprises Inc of Toronto, Ontario, to renegotiate its six-year-old alliance with Sprint Corp has been criticized by renegade shareholder Crescendo Partners LP. Crescendo said the deal would only strengthen the hold of the current management and board on the company and diminish shareholder value. Crescendo heads a group of institutional shareholders controlling a 13.3% stake that launched a bid to oust management on Aug 4, 1999.
