The spending spirit: retail sales are finally picking up

Article Abstract:

Many retailers are benefiting from an increase in consumer spending during the 1996 Christmas season. Experts predict that 1996 retail sales will exceed those of 1995 by 4% to 5%. Early sales and deep discounts are largely unnecessary due to more shoppers and more tightly controlled inventories.
