Candle Corp.'s owner, Aubrey Chernick, one of the 400 richest individuals in the US, is a Canadian with a net worth of just under C$1billion. Chernick, whose Santa Monica, CA-based software company reported sales of $307 million in 1997, grew up in Manitoba and spent some time working for Canadian computer firms and institutions before establishing Candle Services Corp. in 1976 in Toronto, Ontario. Chernick, who said his first sale was to Canada Life Assurance Co., moved his firm to California and change its name to Candle Corp. in 1977.
