The virus: threat or menace?

Article Abstract:

Polymorphic viruses or polymorphs are new types of computer viruses that mutate and change their signature regularly, thus rendering current antivirus technology, which concentrates on detecting the presence of a tell-tale signature, ineffective. Virus mutation engines, such as Dark Avenger and the Virus Creation Laboratory, allow programmers to create polymorphic viruses. Dark Avenger afflict electronic bulletin boards while the Virus Creation Laboratory offers an actual user interface that provides even novices the means to create viruses. To fight the influx of new virus technology, Central Point Software is coming out with Central Point AntiVirus 4.0, a $129.95 program that uses an enhanced signature-based scheme called generic protection that detects both viral behavior and viral code. The new anti-virus technology requires users to update their software monthly.

Stacker can double hard disk's memory

Article Abstract:

Stac Electronic's Stacker 2.0 is a data compression package that can double the effective capacity of a hard disk drive. The program functions as an on-the-fly compression and decompression tool that operates invisibly and automatically. The program comes in two versions. The $149 version is software-only, while the more expensive version, which includes a co-processor card, costs between $189 and $299. Installation of the program and the card is very easy. Stacker 2.0 works with floppy disks, regular hard disks, removable hard cartridge drives and tape drives and runs on MS DOS 5.0, Microsoft Windows 3.0 and several memory managers. Some computer vendors may include Stacker with a microcomputer and claim to offer an 80Mbyte hard drive; this is actually a 40Mbyte drive with Stacker's file compression allowing 80Mbytes of data to be stored.
