Thirst for growth: Molson tries to halt a decline in beer sales

Molson Breweries' Canadian marketshare fell from 52.2% in 1989, to 45.8% during the fiscal quarter ending Jul 1, 1997. CEO John Barnett decentralized the firm's operations and began niche marketing. The brewery is also considering running a controversial commercial showing two women kissing.

The end of a dream: Molson jettisons a money-losing U.S. subsidiary

Article Abstract:

Molson Cos announced in Jan 1996, that it plans to sell a majority stake of its subsidiary Diversey Corp to Unilever for $780 million. Diversey lost $37.7 million in 1994. Molson Chmn Marshall A Cohen plans to pay down debt and possibly acquire other breweries with the proceeds.
