Court to hear GTE subsidy protest

Article Abstract:

GTE Corp's lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will be reviewed by the Supreme Court and arguments on the case will be heard starting in Oct 2000. GTE is challenging FCC's use of a new formula based on a model, known as forward-looking pricing, that calculates subsidies designed to maintain affordable telephone service in rural areas and other places that are costly to serve. US West and SBC Communications expressed their support for the GTE's lawsuit.

Tiremakers boost output to meet demand for replacements

Article Abstract:

Bridgestone/Firestone Inc announced that it will increase production of replacements of its recalled tires that is being investigated by government agencies. The recalled tires were the P235/75R-15 ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT Tires made in North America and Mexico. Goodyear and Michelin said they are increasing production of tires that can replace the recalled Firestone tires. Ford Motor Co informed its dealers that the recalled tires can be replaced by non-Firestone tires on its SUV vehicles.
