Tobacco firms challenging B.C. on smoking-related act

Article Abstract:

Canadian tobacco firms RJR-Macdonald Corp, Imperial Tobacco Ltd and Rothman Benson & Hedges will challenge the British Columbia government before the province's Supreme Court on a law which the three firms claim is unconstitutional and takes away the power of judges. The law enables the province to bring tobacco firms to court on behalf of all smokers in the province and prescribes the amount of information which courts may request.

Intrawest to get discount on B.C. power

Article Abstract:

Ski resort developer Intrawest Corp has obtained a deal with the government of British Columbia for discounts in its hydro-electric rates. The deal falls under the province's Power of Jobs program in which companies should be able to generate jobs to qualify for discounted power rate. Under the deal, Intrawest will increase its ski season by two months which would result in 140 additional jobs.

Ivanhoe board appointment pushes stock up

Article Abstract:

Ivanhoe Energy Inc saw its stock price improved after energy sector executive Shunichi Shimizu was appointed to its board. Schimizu, a 33-year veteran in the oilpatch, was the former representative of Occidental Petroleum Co's Japanese subsidiary. He is expected to play a significant role when Ivanhoe Energy begins raising funds for development projects in California and China.
