Article Abstract:

Seasonal rains activate bacteria in the soil and can cause the bacterial infection melioidosis. Infections from the 1998 rain season on the Top End coast of Australia have claimed three lives and has sent many more to the hospital; some of the victims are fighting for their lives. Melioidosis attacks the blood and victims contract blood poisoning which leads to multiple organ collapse. It can also be switched off for years and then reactivate.

Caste in the crossfire

Article Abstract:

The Indian government in May 1998 conducted underground nuclear tests in the north-western state of Rajasthan. The residents living a few hundred meters away were warned to stay outside their homes because their house might collapse. No effort was made to evacuate these people, better known as the Bishnoi, who are vegetarian opium eaters and dedicated to protecting the environment.

Park strife

Article Abstract:

A power struggle over the management of Kakadu National Park is being fought between the Australian federal government and the park's Aboriginal traditional owners. Their agreement is on the verge of collapse because of the government's attempts to change the park's administration and make it more responsive to government's wishes.
