Tribunal lifts anti-dumping duties on cold-rolled steel

Article Abstract:

The Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) will lift anti-dumping duties required on cold-rolled steel from the US, Britain, France, Germany and Italy effective on Jul. 29, 1998. In deciding to lift the policy, the CITT said that the Canadian government has no reason to continue imposing the anti-dumping taxes, which ranged from 17% to 46%, because there was basically no possibility that overseas steel makers would be dumping steel in Canada in the future. The ruling will be a surprise for Canadian steel makers but welcome news for Canadian auto parts makers.

Time is right for stronger dollar: Dodge

Article Abstract:

David Dodge, Bank of Canada Governor stated that a stronger currency is exactly what Canada needs right in February 2004 to give the country a much-needed productivity boost. A stronger Canadian dollar makes machinery and equipment less expensive compared to hiring more people, and so it would help boost productivity, as well as help companies deal with an aging work force.
