Troubling Economic Signs for Giant Automaker

Article Abstract:

DaimlerChrysler may be focusing on the marketing of luxury automobiles, such as the new Mercedes-Benz McLaren sports car and Chrysler 300C sedan, but its financial and sales woes are receiving greater attention. Its Chrysler Corp. unit is rumored to plan more layoffs having just reported a $1.1 billion operating loss in the second quarter, and its production partner Mitsubishi Motors is trying to recover from a $419 million loss from sales to young car buyers who defaulted on their auto loans. Problems with Mercedes-Benz mechanical flaws have contributed to decreased sales of the luxury sedan.
