UK: COMPLICATED PLANNING PROCESS FOR PORTS

Article Abstract:

Associated British Ports is at odds with the European Commission and UK government over the complicated nature of obtaining planning permission in coastal areas. The port operators claim that English Nature, the government body responsible for designating sites as special areas of conservation (SAC), did not take into account economic and social factors when it designated the whole Severn Estuary an SAC. A ruling by the European Court of Justice on 7 November 2000 stated that English Nature did not have to take these elements into account. Other port operators have similar complaints about the length of time it takes to gain planning permission. The government claims it is merely concerned with the protection of such sites and is not slowing down development on purpose. Bristol Port is seeking legal advice on the matter.

UK: GOVERNMENT URGED TO PROCEED WITH LIBERALISATION

Article Abstract:

The UK government has been urged by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to proceed with the creation of a liberal cargo market between the UK and the US, a deal that was due to be in position by summer 2002 but which is being held up by the wet-lease dispute of small UK cargo operators. The FTA believe the economic benefits are too great and that the UK government needs to sacrifice the demands of the smaller airlines.
