Understanding Islam: Muslim identities

Article Abstract:

The apparent worldwide increase in observance of Ramadan, a fast observed by Muslims, corresponds with Islam's increasing visibility and in the Muslim world and elsewhere. Islam has become the primary source of identity for those in the Middle East and the religious resurgence occurring among the people of Islamist countries such as Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Iran, Egypt are discussed.

Article Abstract:

The 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, United States, have increased tensions between Muslims worldwide and the West. Many Muslims in the US and elsewhere view the victory of Islamist groups in several countries as a backlash against the widespread perception that the US as t US-proclaimed war on terror amounted to a war against Islam.

Islam began as the faith of a small community in Arabia in the seventh century and within decades became the dominant but divided religion of a powerful empire. The 20th century saw the divide within Islam between secular nationalists and Islamic fundamentalists over how best to regain a measure of the glories of the past.
