By not asking its unions, a year ago, for major cuts in future pension benefits, United Airlines opened itself to its current labor unrest, following its recent decision to stop funding its pension plans until it has come out of bankruptcy. The airline was counting on a government loan guarantee to cover its pension obligations, but its application was rejected three times, forcing the airline to take action regarding its pension plans.
