United Nations at 50

Article Abstract:

The United Nations (UN) turns 50 years old in 1995 and has a long history of success, but its future viability is being questioned by many. The organization's ineffectualness in Bosnia receives much press, despite the fact that the five permanent Security Council nations are the main reason behind a lack of action. Others point out that in the wake of the Cold War, the UN's role is evolving to meet new needs. In the US, some are calling for less action by the UN, while the president says that the Un should become more important in global affairs.

Oil pollution act

Article Abstract:

Public outcry caused by the Exxon Valdez accident prompted the US Congress to enact the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. It was signed into law by President George Bush. The act covers the responsibility for oil spills, fines, and a national response system, and enumerates the powers and duties of the Coast Guard in prevention and clean-up operations. The law also requires transport companies to have contingency plans to be approved by the Coast Guard.

New air quality standards: should U.S. pollution regulations be stricter?

Article Abstract:

Controversy exists whether federal air quality standards should be improved. The Environmental Protection Agency will decide in July 1997 on proposed levels for ozone and particulates. Industry groups oppose new standards, claiming that any health improvements will not offset the economic costs, and that the EPA is using faulty research. Supporters of new standards include public health professionals and EPA Administrator Carol Browner.
