Unshackling treatment could raise premiums

Article Abstract:

United Healthcare's decision to transfer to doctors the decision to approve medical decisions could increase premiums which are already rising throughout the health insurance industry. The decision will lessen delays and obstacles in getting permission for procedures such as surgery, bone scans or home health care. While United's decision is part of the industry trend towards fewer regulations, some see it as primarily as a marketing ploy which will not save money and will not be supported by employers.

Health plan eases doctor oversight

Article Abstract:

Second-largest US health insurer United Healthcare announced on Nov 8, 1999 that it would no longer require doctors to seek permission to conduct tests or admit patients to hospitals. The firm said the costs of oversight of doctors was expensive and contributed minimally to the coordination of care. The oversight was imposed to control costs and some experts contend that it, in fact, protected patients from uneccesary medical procedures.
