This article describes plans by the Australian communications giant Telstra to market new mobile telephones capable of high-speed data transmission. Telstra is investing $600 million in the new system, known as CDMA, which it will market to regional users as well as urban business people. Relevant details include confidential documents revealing the role of Australian Communications Minister Richard Alston in persuading Telstra to introduce a digital network in the country as well as the cities.

Issues are presented concerning the work which is carried out by the Fred Hollows Foundation which brings affordable blindness treatments to people in developing countries. The policy of major drugs companies to the third world is discussed.
