Victors and vanquished

Article Abstract:

The year 2000 proved to be a difficult period for many Internet startup companies. Many of these firms, also known as dot-coms, failed to obtain fresh venture capital funding. Technology stocks lost their appeal for investors at the stock market, with disastrous consequences. At least 130 fledgling online firms went out of business and roughly 40,000 dot-com workers lost their jobs. Traditional investors, shrewd enterpreneurs and savvy executives were among the winners in the Internet industry in 2000. Laid-off employees, overeager investors and dot-com companies which could not control costs were among the losers.

Pop.com site fizzles despite Hollywood star power

Article Abstract:

The much-publicized Internet entertainment site called Pop.com effectively shut down before it even opened for business by laying off most of its 90 workers on Sep 5, 2000. The site was to have offered short films and animations from some of the most renowned directors in the motion picture industry, including Steven Speilberg and Ron Howard. Its demise underscores the troubles of a fledgling online entertainment industry beset by too many competitors and too few advertising revenues.
