Web surfers find cracks in wall of official China

Article Abstract:

China's rulers are facing difficulties in their effort to control the Internet boom among its citizens, 9 million of which are engaged in online transactions. The government is aware of the necessity of being wired to the Internet if it is going to keep pace with the challenges of the 21st century economy. However, keeping a tight rein on the exchange of information in public is proving to be much of a challenge. Therefore, the government has tightened laws for Internet content providers and freelance writers who supply content to the sites.

GM fires on all cyclinders in China

Article Abstract:

General Motors Corp has proved critics wrong by surpassing its 1999 sales projection in China for the pricey Buick sedan. The company's local venture, Shanghai GM, sold 19,789 Buicks in 1999 in China, exceeding its original expectation of 15,000. Some observers had expected a non-existent market in China for the sedan, which costs $40,000. However, sales have dropped 48% in the first quarter 2000 from fourth quarter 2000.

Shanghai dealers emulate Saturn

Article Abstract:

General Motors Corp's success in selling Buick sedans in China is due in part to a customer service approach patterned after Saturn dealers in the US. Shanghai General Motors, GM's local venture, has trained local salespeople not to haggle over prices. Showrooms have sofas and little cubicles where salespeople talk with customers. After a sale, dealers get in touch with customers with newsletters and notices.
