Placing BET on the Net

BET Holdings Inc will launch a new portal, BET.com, in an effort to further expand its franchise, which currently includes four themed restaurants, magazines, books, jazz and movie channels. BET.com, a $35- million project with News Corp, USA Networks, Microsoft, Media and Liberty Digital, features news, job information, a chat room and hip-hop, R&B and rap music videos.

Welch book must sell 1.5M copies to show profit

Article Abstract:

Warner Books Inc, which won the right to publish the memoirs of General Electric Chmn and CEO Jack Welch, intends to sell about 1.5 million copies of the book within four months of release. The company, which paid $7.1 million for the right to release the book in North America, has set the tentative release of the book to fall 2001. Warner Books' book on Welch will be priced at about $30 for the hardcover edition, $30 and $20 for unabridged and abridged tapes and about $19 for softcover versions.

Family values TV

Article Abstract:

Pax TV is struggling to gain more network viewership by providing family-oriented programs. The TV network, started in 1997, is committed to bring wholesome shows and programs with moral content to American viewers, according to company founder Lowell "Bud" Paxson. Pax TV, which posted a Nielsen rating of 0.5% and one share, is expected to absorb charges of $90 million by the end of 1998 but will register growth in cash flow in the first quarter of 1999, Paxson projects. The network is airing programs such as Diagnosis Murder and developing novel-based shows that include "Little Men" by Louisa May Alcott.
