White-collar layoffs

Article Abstract:

The recession has caused massive layoffs among white-collar workers in major American industries. In past recessions, the service industries continued to expand and layoffs were mostly among blue-collar workers. In retail companies, a major cause of white-collar layoffs is the increasing use of automation. The end of the Cold War and cutbacks in defense spending are also lessening the number of jobs in the defense industry. In the financial services and banking industries, jobs are being eliminated due of mergers and takeovers.

Will stress caused by corporate downsizing hurt companies in the long run?

Article Abstract:

The increasing stress faced by employees after corporate restructuring has led some to question the benefits to the company of such organizational changes. Some claim that any money saved will be lost through increased absenteeism, workers' comp and violence. Others claim that there is no proof that such tragic events really effect a company's bottom line. No one denies that such reorganizations are bad for the employees, however.
