Facing the price of a home computer

Article Abstract:

Many parents face a nerve-wracking decision as the school year approaches: which microcomputer should they buy their children for home educational use? The best advice is for parents to include their children in the decision so as to encourage continuing involvement with the computer. The Apple Macintosh remains the most user-friendly microcomputer system, and deserves strong consideration despite a continuing price-premium over MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows systems. It is also something of a status symbol among children. DOS-Windows microcomputers are in no sense second rate, however, and new models from Compaq Computer Corp and the IBM PC Co are well worth looking into. Complete systems always cost more than parents plan to spend, once extra memory, such peripherals as CD-ROM drives and better printers and future software purchases are factored in.

Prodding Digital PC's toward the winner's circle

Article Abstract:

Enrico Pesatori, the new GM of personal computer operations at DEC, says DEC has a major opportunity in the microcomputer market. DEC, which is the nation's second-largest computer manufacturer, has encountered difficulties in recent years. Pescatori hopes to function as part of a team that turns the company around. He points out that the DEC name is widely respected and the company has been successful in channels where it has chosen to operate during the past 12 months. Before he came to DEC, Pescatori spent two years restructuring microcomputer operations at Zenith Datasystems Inc. Before that, he spent 21 years as an executive with Ing C Olivetti and Co.
